War on Weeds
Will Carpenter has been waging a war on weeds all of his life. He grew up as the son of the District Agent for the Northwest Mississippi Extension Service, so farming principles were a part of his life early on. As a young man in the Delta, he worked during the summers clearing weeds for the Army Corps of Engineers, battling snakes and mosquitos as he worked. At Monsanto, he headed the teams that tested, and ultimately brought to market, weed killers Lasso and Roundup, products that enabled farmers world-wide to battle the crop invaders more easily. So, it is not surprising that he would one day be active in the WSSA, Weed Science Society of America, a non-profit professional society, promoting research, education, and awareness of weeds in managed and natural ecosystems.
Below is a recently compiled, complete list of the presidents of the organization, which includes Dr. Will D Carpenter, who served as president from 1980 to 1981.
